Spring 2018

Spring Nature Nights at the Nature Center

The Bryan Osborne Nature Area at Peterson Middle School invites students and their families to join us for three "Nature Nights" this spring. "Nature Night" seeks to connect SCUSD students and families to their environment through education and community involvement. This is a fun-filled family event open to K-12 students and their families. Nature Night will feature a potluck dinner, brief educational program following the theme of the evening, and a community service, art project, or hike for families to complete/ enjoy together.

This spring, Nature Night will be held on March 30th, April 27th, and May 25th from 5PM - 8PM. The potluck will be from 5PM - 6PM, the educational program will be from 6 - 6:30PM, and the project/hike will be open for families to begin and complete between 6:30PM and 8PM.

  • The theme for March 30, 2018 will be “Frog Talk". During this event we will learn about the species of frogs that live at the nature area and how to “talk” to them. After learning about one species’ behavior and how to have a conversation with them, we’ll go on a night hike through the nature area to see some frogs and find out what they have to say back to us.
  • The theme for April 27, 2018 will be "Herps Up Close". During this event we will get to visit with CA native amphibians and reptiles and learn about their natural history.
  • The theme for May 25th will be “Celebrate Monarchs!”. Monarch butterflies are in decline. Come learn about monarchs and discover ways you can help this species. Following the educational program, students and parents will be decorating their own monarch wings for a monarch walk through the nature area. Participants will also receive a CA native milkweed plant to take home for their gardens.

Nature Nights are brought to you by the Santa Clara Unified School District and will have a limited capacity. The cut off will be 50 people for each event. If you would like to attend one of these events, please RSVP before spots fill up! RSVPs will be accepted starting on the 1st of the month for that month’s event and should be directed to the Nature Area Curator, Kelly Overduijn at or 408-423-2845. Thank you! We hope to see you this spring at Nature Nights!
