What's happening at Peterson??   T

  • State of the District:
    • Facilities' Bond Update:  Mrs. Harris recently met with Larry Adams and the SCUSD Bond Team to discuss upcoming possible renovations at Peterson to the locker room building and pool.  Nothing is scheduled yet as the final project will depend on whether or not a facilities bond is approved by the voters in November 2018.  
    • Budget Updates - District Wide:  targeted funds are lower for next year; SCUSD is providing one-time "soft" funds for classroom and school furniture.  
  • State of the School
    • Much planning for next year is in process:  Peterson + meeting last week, next year's electives for this year's 6th & 7th graders, scheduling and changes to our schedule next year due to needs. We are still looking to hire a few folks for next year.  The people applying for jobs in our school district are highly qualified, and makes this yearly process fun!
    • EL PAC Assessment for all English Language Learning students:  Speaking, listening, reading and writing assessments all completed.
    • End of Year Activities - getting prepared for:
      -8th Grade "Talk" scheduled for Friday, April 6 to remind 8th graders of fun upcoming end of the year activities and required grades, behavior to participate.

      -8th Grade Panoramic Photo will be taken Friday, April 6.
    • Yearbooks are on sale now.  $40/book; see the order form on the website or pick up a purple form in the office.  Orders are due Friday, May 25.
    • Open House on Thursday, May 3 - went FABULOUS!  It was nice to meet and welcome over 300 new families in our cafeteria. We look forward to the PTSA Scholastic Book Fair.  Culinary will be offering baked goods for sale.
    • Mrs. Harris and the staff are continuing to expand their technical skills.  Mrs. Harris recently created a Screencastify informational bulletin for the staff before a staff meeting.  The administration is looking into creating videos for the website to inform parents about various things at Peterson.  If you have suggestions, please email Mrs. Harris.
  • Community Building at Peterson (by department):
    • Performing Arts Club presents Haphazardly Ever After on Wednesday, April 4.  One show only at 2:00pm after school!
    • The Variety Show will feature lots of Peterson students on Tuesday, April 10.  Two shows only - 12:20pm and 1:30pm during the school day.  We're on a special 6th period A/B assembly bell schedule.
    • Electives -
      • Environmental Leadership class is giving elementary school tours of the Nature Center.
      • Upcoming Nature Nights with Steve Sanders and Kelly Overduijn; Environmental Leadership class students are helping.
      • Advanced Culinary Arts students worked with Ponderosa kindergarteners to make pizza and participated in FCCLA competitions.
      • Leadership hosted a fun 7/8th grade "Tropical Waters" dance and are in the middle of Spring Spirit Week "Back to the Future".
    • Social Studies
      • NEW 8th grade panning for gold event.   Cross-curricular lessons in Social Studies, Science, Woods (elective).
      • Only two teachers are participating in the Social Studies Fair this year.  Projects will be on display at Open House.
    • Library / English - Many author visits including Allie Carter and Roshani Chokshi.
    • Counseling / Admin - counseling team attended Mental Health & Wellness conference.  There will be changes in Student Services next year for at-risk students.
    • 8th Grade Team - the new Peer Tutoring Lunch Club where students are helping other students is going great.  
  • Grade levels 
    • 6th Grade - Project Cornerstone
    • 7th Grade - planning to purchase benches to put outside of D-wing facing Pirate's Cove
    • 8th Grade Promotion preparation already happening
    • Incoming students Pirate Camp planned for August 8
  • Thank you PTSA and Health & Wellness for providing Parent Education opportunities.  The March screenings of Race to Nowhere were well attended.  Upcoming Parent Ed:  the new documentary Beyond Measure at Wilcox High School on April 11.  See the trailer at HERE.
